Reliable Hybrid Power in Low-Irradiance Conditions

CASE STUDY – FPS20-10

GIPPSLAND, VICTORIA     |    1 NOVEMBER 2025 – 10 JULY 2026

Future Power Systems deployed the FPS20-10 hybrid power system to power temporary site facilities in Fulham, Gippsland.

The site was a strong real-world test for hybrid power performance. South-East Victoria has low solar irradiance, which means the FPS20-10 had less available sunlight during the deployment period. Even with these conditions, the system was chosen to deliver reliable temporary power while reducing diesel generator runtime, fuel use, and emissions.

WHAT WAS POWERED

The FPS20-10 supported temporary site facilities including:

  • 2 x 12m x 3m Lunch Rooms

  • 1 x 12m x 3m Office

  • 1 x 40ft Containerised Workshop

  • 1 x 20ft Workshop

  • 1 x 6m x 3m Toilet Block

THE CHALLENGE

The site was located in one of Australia’s more challenging solar regions, receiving only 6.1 hours of mean daily sunshine during the hire period.

This created a useful test case for hybrid power performance under lower irradiance conditions.

The client required reliable power for site facilities while also seeking to reduce diesel generator runtime, operating costs and environmental impact.

THE FPS SOLUTION

Future Power Systems deployed the FPS20-10, a containerised hybrid power system combining solar generation, battery storage and backup generation.

The system was designed to prioritise solar and battery use where available, while maintaining backup generation to ensure reliability during periods of higher demand or reduced solar output.

System configuration included:

  • Containerised hybrid power system

  • Integrated solar generation

  • Battery energy storage

  • Backup diesel generation

  • Site-ready deployment format

PERFORMANCE OUTCOME

The Fulham deployment demonstrated how a hybrid power system can support temporary site facilities while reducing the need for continuous diesel generator operation.

By using the FPS20-10 instead of relying on a 24-hour diesel-only generator setup, the project achieved an estimated:

  • 12,650.4L of diesel use avoided

  • $27,830.88 in diesel cost avoided

  • 34.16 tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided

This provided the customer with reliable site power while reducing fuel demand, emissions and operating costs.

SYSTEM USED: FPS20-10

The FPS20-10 is a containerised hybrid power system designed for construction, infrastructure and temporary off-grid site applications.

It combines deployable solar generation, battery storage and backup generation to provide practical site power while helping reduce diesel reliance

Best Suited For

Construction compounds, site amenities and temporary off-grid power

Many temporary sites still rely on diesel generators running for long periods, even when demand is low. This increases fuel use, operating costs, noise, maintenance and emissions.

Hybrid power systems provide a more efficient alternative by using solar and battery storage where possible, while retaining backup generation for reliability.

For sites like Fulham, this means practical temporary power with lower diesel reliance and measurable environmental benefits.
